Butterfield & Company

Oil on Canvas, 24 in. x 36 in., $4000

This is a portrait of Jt.-MFH Patrick Butterfield on his hunter “Dugan,” chatting with another member of the field while waiting for the huntsman to draw the first covert.
I first met Pat and his lovely wife, Kay when they visited my art gallery in Saratoga Springs, New York in 2002. They stopped by every year while they were in town for the races. Pat was knowledgeable about hunting and steeplechasing, and had a great sense of humor. I thought it’d be fun to see him in action.
The lighting in this painting is my favorite kind of lighting – back or rim lighting, when the sunlight behind the figures in the foreground outlines them against a darker background. It creates a stunning visual effect.
I hope I’ve conveyed my feelings for Pat in my painting. I like him and respect him. This is my homage to his legacy at Farmington.
