While taking photos at the Pennsylvania Hunt Cup one year, my head was turned by a stunning lead pony. I asked Charlie, the outrider, the horse’s name. He said rather matter-of-factly, “Wayward Lad.” My response was, “THE Wayward Lad?!” I had seen a champion steeplechaser named Wayward Lad race in England several years earlier, and couldn’t believe he was here in America, happily stabling a hunt cup entrant to and from the track! The term, “In Mufti” is a military term used to denote wearing ordinary clothes instead of a uniform.
